Most of us seem to agree that fundamental changes need to occur but where do we start?
Thursday, January 5th, 2023
Long time advocate and volunteer with Solidarity Not Charity, Kim Smith will be offering a free training on your rights and the rights of others when advocating for our houseless community members.
The training will start at 6pm and everyone from the community is welcome to attend
Unitarian Universalist Congregation - 536 Ouray Ave.
Most of us seem to agree that fundamental changes need to occur in our world and our country but where do we start? How do we even begin to do transformative work here in Grand Junction, Colorado?
To heal our society we as community members must learn basic skills to best support and provide essential services for EVERYONE in our community including our most marginalized groups of BIPOC, seniors, disabled, LGBTQ2AI+, and houseless neighbors.
To that end we’ve begun a series of training sessions at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Grand Valley. These classes are focused on intersectional and inclusive work to ensure that no one is marginalized or left out.
Upcoming trainings to look for:
• Mutual Aid core concepts and practices
• De-Escalation
• Community defense
• 1st aid / CPR
• Drug overdose / harm reduction response
• Local history / Mutual Aid history
• Internet Security and encrypted communications
• Non-Violent communication
• Tips for speaking at City Council
• DEI training
• Gardening to feed your community
• And more to come!

About Jimi Blevins, Community Empowerment Visionary
I find myself in more and more conversations with other humans about the state of our world and our country. I feel like there is a growing dread and loss of hope because our obstacles seem to keep piling up while solutions appear harder and harder to find. Most of us seem to agree that fundamental changes need to occur but where do we start? How do we even begin to do transformative work here in Grand Junction, Colorado?
I believe our best way forward is to come together as a community and learn the basic skills needed to best support and provide essential services to one another. To that end I’ve begun a series of trainings at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Grand Valley beginning in August and hopefully continuing for a very long time. I also believe that we cannot do this without creating support systems that work for EVERYONE in our community. Even in the best of times our BIPOC, disabled, LGBTQ2AI+, and houseless community members go without access to basic human services like food, shelter, and emergency medical care. That is why our trainings are laser focused on intersectional and inclusive work to ensure that no one is marginalized or left out. I hope to see you on Thursday night! |
