What it is Not: There are currently five states where a competent, terminally ill adult can request a prescription for a life-ending medication to be self-administered when, and if, the person’s suffering becomes unbearable. "Death with Dignity" laws as they are often called, incorporate comprehensive safeguards to prevent abuse and misuse. A bill that was before the legislature failed to pass this year, but its sponsors have already announced plans to re-introduce it in 2016. So what is “death with dignity,” how has it worked in other states, how would it law work here, and what were the objections to passing it this year. Colorado is currently at the center of the Death With Dignity debate and legislative efforts. Speaker Roland Halpern of Compassion and Choices offers two separate presentations on Death With Dignity and efforts in Colorado to pass new legislation.
