I rise for survivors of gender violence. Will you?! Saturday February 20th at 10 am CMU Meyer Ballroom, 1100 North Ave. We speak to create awareness, share to empower, sing to inspire, and dance to celebrate! Knowing that together, all of us, can create real change and usher in a new era that embraces humanity and kindness as strength. Come to be inspired, hear motivational speakers, music & dancing! I drew this using a photo I took at the Denver MLK March/Parade this last weekend (Jan. 16th). I've titled it "Why We March!" I was proud to be marching, singing, and chanting with the UU Youth from CO, NM, UT, and WY. ~Shari Daly-Miller Housing Low-Income People

MLK Youth Summit: The Sleeping Giant, Or Why Black Lives Matter Location: First Unitarian Denver, Jan 16, 2016 @ 2:00 pm through Jan. 18th, 2016 @ 12:00 pm. Cost for this weekend-long event, which includes meals, is $50 early or $60 late registration. Each year at First Unitarian Denver there is an anti-oppression / social justice overnight for youth culminating in the parade march on MLK day. After 6 years of incredibly successful programming ranging from economic justice to GLBTQ bullying to immigration justice to racial equality, MDD has expanded this event to encompass 3 days of growth, learning, activism, and advocacy. This year, the MLK Summit will focus on Black Lives Matter. The Denver poet, Suzie Q, has written an amazing song with the help of NO Enemies (Flobots) promoting racial activism. The words go, “I am a sleeping giant, there lives a riot in my bones.” Suzie’s words are a call to action in the work against oppression. And, as a faith community, we are called to work for an end to the injustices faced by people of color in our communities, so that every person is treated equally and has a fair chance at life. Outside of this intentional learning, there will also be free time, non-themed workshop time, and opportunities for youth to connect between tracks and share about their experiences. Will you join with us to make a difference in our world? Registration has THREE steps! Go to www.mdduua.org for registration and more information. A Winter Solstice Ritual Dance of Healing For All Ages and Abilities On the Eve of Solstice Sunday, December 20th at 5pm Please Bring a Vegetarian Item to Share Pete Seeger Songfest - Remembering Pete Through his Songs We’ll honor Pete Seeger, singing many of his well-loved songs such as If I Had a Hammer, Turn, Turn, Turn, Where Have All the Flowers Gone and many others. All interested singers welcome, no experience necessary. Led by composer/guitarist Jim Scott, who knew Pete well and collaborated on many projects with the folk legend, we'll raise our voices for the causes Pete championed and remember the great contributions to our American heritage Pete made in his 94 years of life. We have lost an icon, but not his legacy of poetry and song to guide and inspire us. Jim Scott brings a warmth, and authenticity that turns any size audience into an intimate gathering. His lyrical melodies, well-crafted words, guitar mastery and humorous surprises moved Pete Seeger to call him “Some kind of a magician.” Known to many as guitarist with the Paul Winter Consort and co-composer of their celebrated "Missa Gaia / Earth Mass," Jim is a prolific composer in his own right. Jim's visited more than 600 UU churches over three decades of travels. His much loved "Gather the Spirit" and other songs are in the UU hymnbooks. He has also become a student of the movement for peace and justice in song, compiling and arranging the "Earth and Spirit Songbook," a collection of over 100 songs of earth and peace by many contemporary composers, including Pete Seeger. www.JimScottMusic.com, call 508-755-0995, or email Jim@JimScottMusic |
